WHAT ARE BACKLINKS?
“Backlink” is one of the most commonly used term in Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Digital Marketing.
But what are backlinks in digital marketing?
When a webpage or website is linked to an another website, it is called a backlink. In simple words, if I put a link of my website to an another website, it is called backlink for my website. Backlink plays an important role in ranking any website in search engines such as Google or Bing.
But if you’re new in blogging and recently started a website, then you may have some difficulty in building backlinks to authoritative websites. This article briefly describes different ways of making backlinks but first let us know how many types of backlinks are there in digital marketing.
TYPES OF BACKLINKS:
Backlinks are mainly of two types:
- Do-follow backlinks
- No-follow backlinks
Do-follow backlink is also called juicy links. Google introduced the concept of do-follow backlink in 2005 with the aim of reducing the spam score to further improving search engine results.
Do-follow links are really helpful in increasing the search engine ranking positions in the SERP of any website. If you create backlinks to highly authoritative websites, they pass link juice to your website.
Websites with high authorities i.e. high domain authority and page authority (PA) have the great influence on search engines like Google. And, Google trust on these authoritative websites. When you create do-follow backlink to these websites, Google or any other search engine bot crawl that specific page and link of that website and the tag of do-follow allows the bot to index the link. It passes link juice to your website. Here’s an example of do-follow backlink:
<a href=“https://website.com/”>Link Text</a>
No-follow tells search engine bots not to follow that particular link and so called “No-Follow Link”. These links do not pass link juice to your website and this type of backlink is not indexed by google or any other search engine bots.
No-follow links are not followed by search engines but it doesn’t mean that they have no value in search engine optimization. They have their own importance in SEO. If you only create do-follow backlinks and there’s no “no-follow backlink” is available for your website, it is a spam in the eye of Google.
And an another reason for creating no-follow backlink is to drive more referral traffic to your website. So, here you need to create both do-follow and no-follow backlinks for your website in an equal ratio.
A no-follow backlink looks like this:
<a href=”http://www.website.com/” rel=”nofollow”>Link Text</a>
<a rel=”nofollow href=”https://www.website.com/”>Link Text</a>
BENEFITS OF DO-FOLLOW BACKLINKS:
- Improves page rank.
- Drive more organic traffic to your site
- Improves the authority of a blog or website.
- Increases search ranking in search engines.
BENEFITS OF NO-FOLLOW BACKLINKS:
- To get more referral traffic.
- No-follow backlinks with do-follow balance the website, it protects you from updates that penalize you for creating backlinks.
